Resistographs drill long, extremely small holes about twenty inches into the tree. They have a computer that measures the resistance by the wood to the drill bit as the hole progresses. The resistance, measured in torque, is usually plotted against distance drilled and can therefore give a good idea of the strength of the wood and any large defects in the tree. The roots can also be drilled to detect problems there.
